Austrian voters reject extremists

Last week's election in Austria saw centrist parties increase their votes and seats compared to the last election in 2017.

The Greens were the biggest gainers (going from no MPs in 2017 to 26 now), but both the liberal NEOS party (up from 10 MPs to 15) and the centre-right Austrian People's Party (up from 62 MPs to 71) also gained, at the expense of the far-right Freedom Party (who slumped from 51 MPs down to 31). The centre-left Social Democrats also lost support, (going from 52 MPs down to 40).

92 MPs are needed to form a government, so coalition negotiations are now well underway. It's unclear just now who will join the People's Party in government, but the direction of travel for voters in Austria is towards the centre-ground.
